1. Research price on popular websites like BESTBUY.COM, AMAZON.COM, OFFICEDEPOT.COM, BUY.COM, PRICEGRABBER.COM, SALESCIRCULAR.COM, FRYS.COM

2. Goto CNET.COM or similar websites that posts review, i use CNET most of the times. check the reviews and watch review videos.

3. If you are buying a video game, goto game review sites and watch the editor's posts and people comments

4. Look for coupons on popular coupon sites, check FATWALLET.COM, COUPONS.COM

5. Local newspaper sites that publish ad pages online.

6. Check EBAY if the same product is available from a highly rated seller (beware of high shipping costs), also try using PAYPAL than giving up your credit card information

So after you are satisfied with this research, make your purchase.

Some more tips to get satisfied with the product by reading its product specs:

1. Research INTEL or AMD sites to get the latest processor information for laptops

2. When buying camera go to manufacturer's website like SONY, NIKON, KODAK etc to download the manual of the product you like, go to the specification pages and compare

3. Of course bestbuy and similar sites provide guides on "how to find the right <gadget>"
